Always there; Remembering strangers

One step at a time,
just baby ones to start - they say
Who are they?
I find it hard to recall faces…

My thoughts gallop
pay no heed of speed limits or stop signs
I race past – who - to what?
What finish line does my eager aim to meet?
I pass strangers on my way,
See them every day
Everywhere
Do I judge them? Do they judge me?
A judgement call in seconds
That has no second chance
of recognition

I still walk on
every day - left then right,
or right then left
before a pause

to think again

In my younger years I jumped straight in
My body faster than my thoughts
Before my mind grew questions
That prove more difficult to answer

Sometimes, I feel so near
to unravelling, something…
almost…nearly…
virtually, touching….
But then,
the goalposts move again
Dead ends, U-turns
I see a stranger round the corner
- of my eye

My steps they start to slow
I must be nearly home
My reflection past

Passed me in that last shop window…
I was sure I saw a stranger
She looked straight back at me
Is she still there?

With thanks to the very talented Lesley who has honoured me with PoW, I am writing to my own prompt, and have “thrown it out there” a bit this week. 1. Suzanne this one is lovely and you so deserve to be the POW for your poem to Lesley’s challenge. Once again the choice is going to be difficult – so many really diverse and well done poems! Good Luck!
